Autism Act 2009 Review - Have Your Say!
Hiya,
Just popping into your inbox to say the government is currently reviewing the Autism Act 2009 in England*.
It’s a piece of legislation that sets out the kind of support autistic people get in settings like healthcare, education and criminal justice system.
A committee has been put together to review the needs of autistic people and create a plan for the next few years. The review is open to input from autistic people and the support providers/carers of autistic people.
As you can image, the official pathway for providing your input is overwhelming, which may make it difficult for some people to participate. I've collaborated with other autistic individuals (@CharliClement_, @GeorgiaHolliday_ and @Neurodivergent_Lou) to create 3 accessible ways for you to share your experiences and ensure your voice is heard.
Plain Language Document: We've developed a user-friendly document to help you navigate the process of submitting evidence yourself. You can find it here.
Simplified Questions via Google Form: We've broken down the review committee's questions into an easy-to-use Google Form. Your anonymous responses will be compiled and included in our evidence submission.
Instagram Comments: We're posting questions from the review committee on Instagram every few days and inviting you to comment. These comments will also be collated for our evidence submission. Check out the orange question posts on my Instagram feed.
Please feel free to use whichever method is most accessible to you. It's crucial that autistic voices are heard in this review process, as the outcome will significantly impact our lives.
*While some of the questions in the review relate to services in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, the majority are focused on England due to how devolved governments are structured. There are however 2 questions at the end of the google form that relate to these countries. The Instagram posts related to these comments will be posted on our feeds in early May.
